The center is located in Golden, Colorado. Research from the facility has created spin off companies. Hampden-Sydney College was able to build an Energy Research Lab (ERL) through the generosity of the Pensmore Foundation and Steve Huff '73. The lab utilizes advanced concrete technology and special insulation to reduce the energy necessary to heat and cool the structure. The floor and walls of the ERL also contain tubing filled with water. Cold ground water flows through the tubing during summer months while warm water (heated by a solar panel) flows through them in the winter. This video describes the student research experience during Phase 1 of the ERL project.
